Making Resolutions That Stick

If making and keeping resolutions were easy we wouldn’t be going through the same motions every year.  A study published by US News & World Report states that 80% of the resolutions are broken by mid February. So how do you make, and more importantly keep, a resolution? Here are some tips and tricks to help you implement the changes you want in 2018.

Define Your Goal

The more specific you are about your resolution, the more likely you are to keep it. If saving money is your goal, resolve to save a specific amount of money each day or each week rather than loosely defining that you want to improve your finances. The same goes for fitness. Just as you wouldn’t decide to run a marathon without training, setting weekly, achievable goals contributes to the overall plan. Being specific helps you act in a defined manner so you’re more likely to keep going.

Write It Down

Sharing your resolution helps keep you accountable. Write down what you hope to accomplish and then refer back to your intention frequently. Having a regular reminder can be a good inspiration tool to keep you focused. Consider joining a group or team that shares your intentions – whether it’s fitness, health related, artistic, or professional. Oftentimes the energy of a group dynamic can help you meet and even exceed your goals.

Establish Checkpoints

If your new year’s resolution is to change a habit, make a point of checking in every week or month. Spend some time thinking about what worked or didn’t work in the past week (or month) and then make any adjustments you need to in order to keep going. Also try to keep your expectations realistic. It’s a lot harder to go from zero to 60 than it is to begin slowly and pick up speed. Radically altering habits or behaviors can be emotionally and physically challenging, and trying to do too much too quickly can lead to burn out.

Reward Your Success

When you celebrate your accomplishments you’re more likely to stay in achievement mode. Take the time to acknowledge your successes and reward yourself for hitting your mark. 

Accept that setbacks happen. When you break your resolution, tell yourself it’s okay. Re-group and keep going. As long as you keep your intention in mind and focus on daily attainable goals, you’re more likely to find success.
