Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

Written By Summerside Chiropractic Clinic on December 19, 2016

Diabetes continues to rise rapidly and in tandem with obesity and overweight people in our population. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes rises 3-7 times in merely overweight to obese people and 20 times in those with a Body Mass Index greater than 35!
Diabetes is a risk factor for many other serious diseases. It increases the chance of hypertension, strokes and heart attacks.
Now the good news! Even small changes make a big difference. Dropping 5% of your body weight help a lot. If you combine that weight loss with exercise 4 times per week you are looking at lifestyle change that is twice as good as a common drug used to treat early diabetes called metformin.
When your cutting calories to prevent diabetes look to dramatically decrease flour, and starchy vegetables like potatoes. If you really like bread use black rye instead of whole wheat. Also, white rice and pasta are good to avoid. Once you've got the ball rolling with a good diet your next step is to find activities that you will enjoy four times per week. You'll be well on your way!
Chat with a doctor before starting really strenuous activity if its' been awhile but get started!
It's the little things you do every day that can make a big change in your life!
