Building Muscle ~ Weekly Q & A

Now that we have the protein we need to build muscle (see previous blog) let's look at some facts about muscle mass that are quite sobering.

The average person's peak muscle mass occurs between the age of 30-35.  It then starts a relentless decline as we go through our years.  Then, at about 65 that decline is much more rapid.  This decline greatly affects our ability to do things that we would enjoy.  I’m not talking neccesarily about climbing a mountain here.  I’m talking about climbing stairs or putting your carry-on above your seat on the plane!  These are real world impediments to feeling like you're fit to travel or keep up with friends on an outing.  When you have that loss of confidence about your ability and perhaps have some embarrassment about it a lot of older people just decide their time for activities has come to a premature end.  It simply does not have to be that way!

Loss of muscle mass greatly affects the quality of life in the “marginal decade”.   The next two weeks we will discuss exercises you can do that are best for protecting those activities of daily living that you need to enjoy life.  My hope is that the above facts will motivate you to increase the set point and decrease the rate of decline of muscle mass.
