Late Evening Eating Increases Appetite & Lowers Energy!
In a study by Vulovic et al. they shifted the exact same 3 meals to later in the day. The study participants were then evaluated for energy expenditure the following days. It was found that they were more lethargic and therefore expended less energy (thus storing more calories!).
Furthermore, the participants in the study that ate late had higher levels of hunger the next day! This was supported by blood tests that measure leptin, a hormone that signals your brain that you have had enough to eat. In another study by Ruddick-Collins et al. they simply shifted more calories toward the end of the day and included late eating. This study also showed that self reported energy levels and appetite also increased the days following.
What is late night eating? Anything within 3 hours of bedtime. Remember when you’re feeling a bit hungry, its healthy for you and you will sleep better? Have a small cup of herbal tea and enjoy a better sleep.
