Anti aging Exercises Types #1-4

Over the next four months at Summerside Chiropractic we are going to take a deep dive into the 4 types of exercise that will keep your physical (and mental!) function optimized for the last 1/4 of life.

The corner stone to an exercise program to anti-age is Zone 2 exercise:

What is Zone 2 Exercise?

Certified trainers and coaches separate the aerobic efforts of exercise into 5 Zones.  It can get complicated but put simply, Zone 2 is pushing you to the point where you could have a conversation but it would be somewhat difficult to do so.  Zone one is a walk in the park but Zone 2 has you breathing quite hard.

The great thing about Zone 2 is that it trains your mitochondria to burn fat!  This is great for elite athletes because it helps them save glucose for harder efforts in a race.  It's great for the rest of us because it helps us burn off the fat. Without the increased ability to burn fat we end up with fat spill over which leads to fat accumulation which drives heart disease and diabetes.

Without well trained mitochondria to burn fat, we end up using glycogen (stored sugars) which will give us less stamina to go for long walks when we are older.  Charge up those mitochondria when we are younger with Zone 2 exercises and they will give us the stamina to spare the glycogen, use fat and get us around a lot better when we are 70, 80 and beyond!

Check out our weekly tips for the best exercises for Zone 2!!

Glossary: Mitochondria

(MY-toh-KON-dree-uh) Small structures in a cell that are found in the cytoplasm (fluid that surrounds the cell nucleus). Mitochondria make most of the energy for the cell and have their own genetic material that is different from the genetic material found in the nucleus.

Mitochondria are the “energy factory” of our body. Several thousand mitochondria are in nearly every cell in the body. Their job is to process oxygen and convert substances from the foods we eat into energy. Mitochondria produce 90% of the energy our body needs to function.
