New Year, Old Habits?

new year

New year, old Habits?  We are often told (and I believe it to be true) that we learn more from failure than success.  I was listening yesterday to an interview with the president of Stantec, Gord Johnston.  They have acquired multiple companies over the years and when he was asked how he is so successful integrating companies into Stantec his response was one to quote!  “Well, we’ve acquired hundreds of companies over the years so if there’s a mistake to make, we made it.”

I am always so impressed with the humility these uber-successful people have.  The key is that they learn from the mistakes.

Learning better from mistakes therefore appears to be essential for future success!  A FAILURE JOURNAL may seem counterintuitive but mistakes made in ones life are inevitable and the more we can learn from them the better.   We get better perspective the longer ago  those mistakes occurred which has several advantages.

First, it makes it less likely we will repeat that mistake.  History will repeat itself if we fail to learn from it.   Reflecting on mistakes made in our past but written in that present is very powerful.  You can see the misplaced anguish that you had when you wrote the mistake down and the errors in thinking that lead to it.

Second, it makes us more resilient to future failures.  At the time of a failure we may have a 9/10 disappointment in ourselves.  However when we reflect back on it 3 months, 6 months and a year later we are very likely to feel we over-reacted to that failure and would want to revise that feeling of disappointment to a 3/10.  Time gives us perspective but only if we remember to re-visit the failure.

Third,  you will see how your perspective changes at 3, 6 and 12 months.  After five years of doing this you will truly start achieving the wisdom that your advancing age should reflect.  It is definitely possible to get old without getting wise!

Success journals are fun and one could combine it in a different section of your failure journal.  It’s never too late to start learning what you should have learned ten years ago!  Its a lot like planting a tree;  the best time was 20 years ago and the next best time is now!
