Stability & Sport Exercise of the week #1: Stability

Stability and balance is critically important to performance in sport.  Developing it now and through out ones life can also be life saving.  The ability to prevent a fall or recover successfully from a stumble to avoid a fall depends in large part ones stability and reaction time.  These neurological functions can certainly be trained but where are you now?
 
An easy test of your current stability is a balance test with your feet placed one in front of then other touching toe to heel.  Once you are in that position, close your eyes.  A reasonably good amount of time to be able to balance there is greater than 10 seconds.  Try it with the other foot in front, see if it's different.  The longer you can keep your balance the better.  Balance can erode as we age so building it up now is a great idea.  There are several stability or functional stability exercises and sports out there.  I’ll be hi-lighting some of my favourites over the month of July.
